Why Lola Tung and Nicholas Chavez Were Cut From 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Reboot

Lola Tung and Nicholas Chavez were cut from the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ reboot—here’s why, straight from the director.
Lola Tung and
Nicholas Alexander Chavez were originally set to appear in the 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, but their roles were ultimately cut from the final version of the film. Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson confirmed the change during the movie’s Los Angeles premiere, explaining that the scene, which was meant to open the film, didn’t fit the final narrative.
“It happens. You shoot something and, when you watch the scene, it doesn’t fit in the film,” Robinson told Variety. She was quick to clarify that the decision wasn’t about performance quality. “Their performance was fantastic,” she said. “But when you’re trying to make something that’s bold, sometimes that happens.”
Tung, known for The Summer I Turned Pretty, and Chavez, who recently starred as Lyle Menendez in Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story, were announced as part of the cast in late 2024. Though fans noticed their absence from trailers and posters, no details about their characters were ever made public.
Robinson praised both actors for how professionally they handled the news. “They’re so sweet, so lovely. They totally got it,” she said, even hinting that a future appearance isn’t off the table: “Maybe they’ll make the sequel.”
