Paul Mescal and
Josh O’Connor are back in the spotlight with a new trailer for The History of Sound, and fans are already calling it equal parts heartbreaking and horny. Directed by Oliver Hermanus, the film adapts Ben Shattuck’s short story about two young men who fall in love while collecting folk songs in early 20th-century America.
Mescal plays Lionel and O’Connor takes on David, music students at the Boston Conservatory in 1917 whose bond deepens on a trip through rural Maine. The latest trailer teases tender kisses, intimate moments in bed, and the looming shadow of World War I. Mescal also shows off his singing voice with a haunting version of Joan Baez’s Silver Dagger.
After its premiere at Cannes, Mescal pushed back against comparisons to Brokeback Mountain, calling them “lazy.” The film hits US theaters on 12 September 2025, Canada on 19 September, with a UK release still to come.
