Owen Cooper Says One 'Adolescence' Scene Was So Difficult He Hated Every Second

Owen Cooper says one Adolescence rehearsal was so far outside his comfort zone he “hated every second of it.”
Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old star of Netflix’s Adolescence, has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on a rehearsal that was especially hard for him to handle.
“The bit where I’m standing over Erin [Doherty] saying, ‘What was that, what was that?’ in rehearsals, I just couldn’t bring myself to do that,” Cooper said. “I hated every second of it. It just wasn’t in my comfort zone whatsoever.”
Cooper plays Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old whose anger toward women grows after rejection and exposure to toxic online media. He admitted the role felt very far from who he is in real life. “Mentally, I struggled with it a lot because I’m nowhere near Jamie at all,” he explained. Despite the challenge, he completed the scene and is now balancing school life with awards season.
