The duet captures a relatable dream: going from fan to friend with your musical hero.

American singer and songwriter Megan MoroneyMegan Moroney just dropped a new single called You Had To Be There, featuring country legend Kenny Chesney. Released on May 9, 2025, via Sony Music Nashville, the upbeat, guitar-driven track celebrates Moroney’s full-circle journey—from fan to touring partner. Inspired by her memories of attending Chesney’s Atlanta concert back in 2018 (in nosebleed seats, Section 312, Row 20, to be exact), Moroney originally wrote the song as a Christmas gift for Chesney last year.

Their friendship blossomed when Moroney joined Chesney’s 2024 Sun Goes Down Tour as an opening act. In the song, she reflects nostalgically on that first concert experience, while Chesney takes the second verse, offering supportive lyrics about cherishing life’s big moments.

Fans immediately connected with the song, praising the warm chemistry between the artists. Chesney described the song as a “postcard” from their tour, noting how special it felt to receive something so personal.

Just one day before releasing her duet with Chesney, Moroney honored Keith Urban in an acoustic performance at the 2025 ACM Awards. Though Moroney was nominated for Female Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Am I Okay? (I’ll Be Fine), she ultimately lost in both categories to Lainey Wilson.
