Kaitlyn Dever Breaks Down That Shocking Scene in 'The Last of Us' Season 2 Finale

Kaitlyn Dever opens up about ‘The Last of Us’ finale, filming challenges, and the scene that shocked even longtime fans.
Kaitlyn Dever appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about The Last of Us Season 2 and her role in one of the show’s most talked-about moments.
Spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the finale. Dever plays Abby, the character who kills Joel, played by Pedro Pascal—a turning point that fans of the video game may have expected but still found difficult to watch.
“It was really sad,” Dever said. “I just killed the love of everyone’s lives on TV.” She added that the scene felt even more intense after watching it back, and shared that creator Craig Mazin told her it was supposed to feel like it went on for hours.
When asked about the reaction, Dever said it’s been more subdued than she anticipated, though some people have made their feelings known. “They would just look at me and shake their heads,” she recalled.
She also mentioned a spider bite she got right before filming—at her home in Los Angeles. The bite had to be digitally removed from scenes. “I know how much VFX costs,” she said, though Craig Mazin reassured her it was covered.
The Last of Us Season 2 is now streaming on Max.
