You might think it’s impossible to make money as a musician without the backing of major labels, but LaRussell proves otherwise.

In a recent interview with NBC News, hip hop artist LaRussell attends REVOLT WORLD x Walmart 2023 at Pangaea Studios on September 24, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia. Derek WhiteLaRussell shared several big tips on how an independent artist can make millions.

LaRussell is known for doing everything DIY. He produces his own music, books his own venues, and sells on his own terms.

Since 2018, he has released a staggering 40 albums and amassed over 100 million global streams. It’s him and his Good Compenny team that make all of this possible.

What the artist has done exceptionally well is allowing fans to bid on ticket prices, suggest prices for merch, and even purchase special experiences with him.

Because there’s no conglomerate entity overseeing his business, all revenue goes directly to him and his team.
Another unconventional tactic he uses is throwing concerts during the day — for example, at 2 p.m.

That’s where the grandmothers, children, and anyone else who doesn’t want to attend late-night shows come in.

At the end of the day, the Bay Area rapper believes that being yourself and staying authentic with fans is what makes a project truly successful.

Doing business independently wasn’t originally a choice but a necessity. Without major label support, LaRussell built a strong brand that now reaps all the benefits of the indie economy.
