Dylan O’Brien Boards 'Being Heumann', Apple’s Judy Heumann Biopic

Dylan O’Brien joins Apple’s ‘Being Heumann’, playing a reporter in the true story of a groundbreaking disability protest.
Dylan O’Brien, best known for The Maze Runner and his internet-loved performances, is joining the cast of Apple Studios’ Being Heumann, an adaptation of disability rights activist Judy Heumann’s bestselling memoir.
Deadline reports O’Brien will play Evan White, a journalist covering the groundbreaking 1977 San Francisco disability rights sit-in. This historic protest, led by Heumann and more than 100 disabled activists, pushed for the enforcement of Section 504, which made federal spaces accessible—a huge win for the disability community and civil rights in America.
The film is directed by Siân Heder, who previously won an Oscar for CODA, and co-written with Rebekah Taussig. Ruth Madeley stars as Judy Heumann, with
Mark Ruffalo playing Joseph Califano, the Carter-era official who initially resisted the activists’ demands. Producers include David Permut and Kevin Walsh, along with Heumann herself as executive producer, helping to ensure the story’s authenticity.
O’Brien comes to Being Heumann after a big year, with his Sundance hit Twinless releasing in theaters September 5 and new projects like Ponyboi and Send Help also on the way.
