Benito Skinner and Wally Baram’s 'Overcompensating' Explores Growing Up and Coming Out

Benito Skinner brings his comedy series ‘Overcompensating’ to Prime Video, inspired by his own college and coming-out story.
Benito Skinner’s new series Overcompensating just premiered on Amazon Prime Video, and to celebrate the occasion, he took to Instagram to share a post marking the milestone, along with some funny behind-the-scenes info.
Skinner posted a video of himself as a child, dancing to Britney Spears’ Oops… I Did It Again—the same video he used to pitch the show, as he reveals in the caption. He says this clip represents a time before he started overcompensating.
Inspired by Skinner’s own experiences, the show follows Benny (played by Skinner), a closeted former football star from Idaho navigating his freshman year at Yates University alongside his best friend Carmen (Wally Baram). Skinner describes Overcompensating as deeply personal, honoring the women—like his late godmother Carmen—who made him feel safe expressing himself growing up, even as the world later pushed him to hide his true self.
The series, produced by A24 and Jonah Hill’s Strong Baby, also stars
Mary Beth Barone and
Adam DiMarco, and features appearances from
Charli XCX (who also handles music production) and
Megan Fox.
