Ayo Edebiri shuts down Syd-Carmy romance in ‘The Bear’, saying their bond is professional, not romantic.

The Golden Globe winner recently told Vanity Fair that while viewers may see “charged” energy between her character, Sydney, and Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy, it comes from their shared ambition in the kitchen, not romance. “That man is crazy and that girl is a bad communicator,” Edebiri joked, adding that a relationship between them would cause the restaurant to “blow up in three seconds.”

Carmy’s actual love story has involved Claire, played by Molly Gordon, a childhood friend whose relationship with him unraveled in Season 2. Claire returned in Season 4, bringing unresolved feelings back into Carmy’s life.

Created by Christopher Storer, The Bear follows Carmy’s return to Chicago to run his late brother’s sandwich shop, with Sydney as his sous-chef. FX renewed the series for a fifth season in July 2025.
