Austin Butler says he briefly went blind while filming The Bikeriders, one of several health scares he’s faced in recent years.

Austin Butler is opening up about some serious health scares, including a moment when he temporarily lost his vision. In a new interview with Men’s Health, the Elvis star recalled being jolted awake by a migraine during a flight while filming The Bikeriders in 2023. “I went blind for several minutes,” Butler shared, adding that he “willed” his sight back before it slowly returned. He returned to work the next day, assuming exhaustion was to blame.

It wasn’t the only challenge. After finishing Elvis, Butler was hospitalized with severe pain that felt like appendicitis. Later, during the Dune: Part Two press tour, he endured eight months of walking with curled toes because of sharp foot pain—eventually traced to a rice-sized shard of glass lodged in his foot.

Reflecting on these struggles, Butler credits Laura Dern with teaching him that intense roles don’t have to take over his life: “You don’t have to destroy the light.”
