The music festival Coachella has been held annually at the Empire Polo Club in the Coachella Valley since 1999 by Goldenvoice. The company protects the “Coachella” name and has filed several lawsuits against those they believe have misused it.
Defendants have included music festival “Hoodchella”, film festival “Filmchella”, an event involving Sean Combs called “Combschella,” and an event called “Wholechella” hosted by supermarket Whole Foods, as well as radio presenter RaaShaun Casey’s show titled “Carchella.”
Although the word “Coachella” was used before the festival’s inception and was not invented by Goldenvoice, it has become their trademark, which they fiercely defend. Organizers of other events must now think twice and seek inspiration elsewhere for their cool names.
