Martin Scorsese Surpasses Steven Spielberg in the Number of Oscar Nominations

Martin Scorsese has become the most nominated living director for the Academy Award.

In an industry where longevity and consistent brilliance are rarities, Martin Scorsese has once again demonstrated his exceptional standing in the world of cinematography. At the age of 81, Scorsese, with 10 nominations (the latest one for the current film “Killers of the Flower Moon”, 2023), has become the living director with the most Oscar nominations.

This surpassed 77-year-old Steven Spielberg, who has received 9 nominations for Best Director over the years. Scorsese has converted his nominations once so far, winning the statue in for the film “The Departed” (2006). Steven Spielberg has taken home two awards: for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998).

The overall most nominated director is the late William Wyler (1902 - 1981), who received a record 12 nominations, converting them into the golden statue three times. Let’s hope that Martin Scorsese will follow in his footsteps and add more converted nominations to his collection.
