Sir Nicholas Winton, born in 1909 in Hampstead, London, was a remarkable individual whose acts of bravery and compassion forever changed the lives of countless children. He organized the rescue of 669 children, mostly Jewish, from Czechoslovakia during the Holocaust. Winton’s selflessness and determination saved these children from an almost certain fate in concentration camps. His story remained relatively unknown until a remarkable turn of events in 1988, when his efforts were brought to light on a popular television show “That’s Life.” Winton’s heroic deeds earned him numerous accolades, including British Hero of the Holocaust,Order of the British Empire and Order of the White Lion. In 2003 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
